Scientists on a recent deep-sea expedition found the squid, called Histioteuthis, along with an abundance of other species thought to be very rare, if not unknown, elsewhere.

Jewel squid are known for their mismatched eyes, one of which is larger than the other to scope for prey in the deep’s darkness.

Caretakers at a British aquarium recently discovered that one of its newest residents, an octopus named Henry, had six legs instead of the usual eight. Apparently the caretakers have researched everywhere to see if there really is such thing, but so far, the only documented six-legged octopus is this one! Therefore, they dubbed him hexapus instead of octopus! The creature doesn’t seem to be of a new species, or been through an accident of any sort, therefore this was caused by some sort of genetic mutation.

This squid was found among 80,000 deep-sea organisms collected from the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a chain of undersea mountains halfway between Europe and North America.This new, unusual type of squid was named Promachoteuthis sloan. The shape of its beak suggests the squid is a powerful chewer.
